Deck Resurfacing: Transparent Water-Based Stain on Cedar

This cedar deck refinish was completed in early summer 2017. This is a transparent stain finished on a cedar deck. The transparent stain allows the wood grain and texture to still be very visible through the colour of the wood.

Clients’ Wishes

The original stain job was not completed with the through and appropriate process required in order for the product to be long-lasting. In the image taken before we commenced work on this project, you can see that the stain has worn off considerably after just one year. This client wanted a stunning deck finish that was to last much longer then the previous.

What We Did

You can see in the images how we disassembled all the handrail to give us full access to the posts, railing construction, stairs and the entire deck surface. We then spent an abundant amount of man hours sanding and stripping the wood surfaces completely. We strip all of the existing stain off, bringing the deck surface down to bare wood. This “new” wood has now had its pours opened up, allowing us to brush stain with optimal adhesion and absorption of the stain product. This process will allow 5-10 years before any maintenance is required, where as a full strip/sand will be unnecessary on the next maintenance coat.
